The Camry might be so common now that you don’t think much of it when you see it, but it’s had quite the exciting past. In fact, it outsold other sedans in the US for 18 years straight, so Toyota has clearly done something right with this car throughout the decades. The Camry debuted in 1983 as an unassuming compact sedan meant to replace the previous Corona. It’s come a long way since then and lived up to its name, "Camry," which comes from the Japanese word “Kanmuri,” meaning crown.
The first couple of generations saw a modest 1.8 and 2.0-liter engine, but soon after, a 2.5-liter V6 would be added in 1988. In 1992, the third-generation Camry came out distinctly larger, elevating it to the class of a midsize vehicle. Toyota played around with its design, and in 1996, we got the Camry coupe. By 1997, Car and Driver named the Toyota Camry one of the 10 Best Cars, giving Toyota the confidence to continue refining the vehicle.
A 3.3-liter V6 engine was added to the Camry, and by 2007 it was already onto a powerful 3.5-liter engine, which caught the attention of those who loved a thrilling behind-the-wheel experience. In fact, Camrys have spent time on NASCAR race tracks over the years. A couple of years after the new powerful engine was released, Toyota launched its first hybrid engine, which saw the beginnings of its green initiatives. Finally, in 2012, we saw a much sharper design with defined lines and a Camry that began to look like the one we know today.
The coupe and convertible dropped off the Camry line for some years, but Toyota took a new interest in making a more performance-focused variety, and in 2020, the sporty Camry TRD arrived, boasting an impressive 301 hp. The year 2021 was a big one for Toyota, announcing that they had built 10 million Camrys. We only anticipate that number growing tenfold.
Though the Camry retains the features drivers love about it, like its responsive steering and comfortable interior, there are some upgrades to look forward to in the 2022 model. The 2022 Camry comes in eight trims, all of which are a thrill to drive and contain one of three fuel-friendly powertrains. In fact, the LE Hybrid gets 51 MPG in the city and 53 MPG on the highway, making it a great car for those hoping to save money on gas and help the environment.
As for aesthetics, you’ll notice an updated fascia featuring a gloss back grille and a mesh insert, accompanied by LED headlights and taillights. This year’s model has a smart key system that allows remote opening and locking of the vehicle, as well as an optional cold weather package with convenient features like heated seats. As for infotainment, a beautiful nine-inch floating touchscreen display loads up all of your smartphone’s apps when using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and crisply shows navigation routes. Those who want something really fun should check out the previously mentioned TRD trim, which boasts a 301 hp V6 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission.
